FDS/Adheris Compliance Program
Introduction
In today’s busy world, the burden of routine care has migrated from the doctor to the patient through the simple necessity of having to take a pill daily for extended periods of time. While the doctor still establishes the diagnosis and initiates treatment, the patient has become responsible for the daily delivery of care and often turns to their neighborhood pharmacy for help in managing their healthcare. Many of these patients don't understand what kinds of benefits they should expect from their medication, how the medicine helps them, or even how long they should remain on therapy.
It has been estimated that 50% of all prescriptions written are never filled and/or are taken in a manner that deviates from the prescriber’s intent (non-compliance). Nearly half of all patients stop taking their medication within the first six months of prescribed therapy. The consequences of poor adherence are poor health outcomes and increased health care costs. In addition, there are additional lost revenues throughout the pharmaceutical distribution channels.
Compliance Program Overview
With FDS' Compliance Program, participating pharmacies receive rebates each time a refill reminder or informational or educational letter about a compliance program-eligible drug is provided or sent to one of their patients.
FDS/Adheris patient education and reminder programs not only reinforce the pharmacist-patient relationship, but also educate patients about their condition and the role their medicine plays in improving their health. The resulting adherence improves therapeutic outcomes, allowing the patient to experience the intended effects of a prescribed medication.
According to the World Health Organization 2003 report on adherence (211 page PDF - 1,543KB), counseling improves and patients actively respond to such communication, modifying their behavior accordingly.
Most large retail pharmacy chains have offered programs to help manufacturers improve adherence rates for their products. Typical programs involve a series of communications to patients who have filled prescriptions for targeted products.
By combining proprietary methods and understanding of patient needs and behaviors, Freedom Data Services (FDS) drives continuous improvements in these areas with:
- Increased brand relevance
- Improved patient retention
- Enhanced marketing productivity

Process
FDS' EZ Data Warehouse updates contain all information required to monitor a patient's adherence status and delivers personalized, relevant product and condition content. Communications are developed to achieve desired objectives.
- Prescription records from the pharmacies are processed and trigger a series of interventions based on program design and logical instructions derived from the patient therapy experience.
- Interventions are printed and mailed to the patients.
- Patients' communications arrive at their own homes directly from their own local pharmacist.
All other phases of each program are handled directly by the team of FDS, Inc. and Adheris, Inc. These programs return $.50 to the pharmacy for each letter, up to six letters per year, sent to each patient to whom the pharmacy dispenses these drugs.
